Last week I returned from one of the more powerful experiences I’ve had working with veterans. I was invited as a guest film instructor to a climbing and filmmaking expedition for veterans in the North Cascades National Park, near Seattle, Washington. The expedition was organized by the Adventure Film School, founded by I WAS THERE Advisor Michael Brown, and sponsored by the Sierra Club Mission Outdoors.
On the climb to Boston Basin and the week of alpine camping, I had the pleasure of sharing a tent with retired Army Captain Dave Fierner, USMA 2004 (pictured below). In a small world moment we realized that Dave’s roommate at West Point was Retired Captain Tony Martinez who took part in our recent workshop at Fort Hood.
Below, check out the shot of us climbing the Sahale peak. It was grueling but memorable, and I felt honored to experience it with an incredible group of five veterans and the capable Adventure Film School staff.
We’ll be posting the films produced by Dave and the other veterans on our website in the coming days.
